Medical Issues: Hair loss and coat staining due to previous flea infestation- improving quickly. Tiny bit overweight

Temperament & Personality

General Personality: Affectionate and easy going, likes a cuddle on the sofa.  Bernie was handed in as she wasn’t getting along with her son, and she wasn’t keen on one of the young children in the house. She became quite irritable after having a litter which was when the problems started with her son and the child in the house. But we have not seen any such behaviour whilst she has been in foster.

Energy Level: Medium outside, low in the house

Likes: Balls, cuddles, back scratches

Dislikes / Fears: Bernie can be nervous when she first meets you, but as soon as she realizes you’re OK she’s your best friend.

Behaviour & Training

Recall: Reasonable. Very good with a ball. Needs work away from other dogs.

Lead Walking: Pulls initially but can be corrected.

Housetrained: Yes. No issues

Crate Trained: No

Can Be Left: Yes, for short periods. She has been left for 3 hours without issue in her foster home with the resident dogs.

Travelling: Fine in the van.

Social Compatibility

With Other Dogs: Generally friendly and keen to meet other dogs, gets on with our two. Can be a little competitive over balls/toys.

With Cats: Not tested

With Children: Due to not liking one of the children she was living with Bernie will not be rehomed around young children.

With Livestock: Not tested

With Strangers: Can be a little wary at times but soon warms up.

Spaniel-Specific Traits

Prey: Low

Scenting / Hunting: Some interest but not that bothered.

Resource Guarding: No

Exercise Needs: She’s been steady on 1.5 hours a day and a bit of garden time.

Ideal Home

Home Type: Whilst Bernie has coped with a busy household, she would love a bit quieter life, with someone around for a lot of the time.  She needs to lose a couple of kilos, so an active home that will take her for plenty of walks.

Experience: An experienced spaniel owner.

Family:

Other Pets: Whilst she is in foster with other female dogs, she was not getting along with the resident male in her previous home.  So, either as a dog on her own or with another female dog of a similar age.
