Max has now been with NESSR for 3months and is fast approaching his 1st birthday.

His last owner bought him off Gumtree as an 8month old Cocker/JRT X, but unfortunately got more than she bargained for.

Instead of a little dog she got a very leggy, tall boy with a love of chewing wood, shoes, soft furnishings (you name it, it got chewed!) Her cat took up residence in the spare room and refused to come out.

Worst of all, Max liked to escape through the garden fence and chase the sheep on the other side.

Thankfully his owner reached out to NESSR before things took a turn for the worst.

In foster he’s pulled like a train on lead, struggled when getting put in the van, cried when travelling, barked when left, leapt onto the dining table, cleared the baby gates in one bound, and chewed whatever he wanted.

He’s received a stern ‘No’ more times than can be counted.

He’s been told ‘get off’, ‘get down’, ‘don’t chew that, chew this’ ‘leave the little ‘un alone!’

You get the idea …

And now?

He walks nicely on a halti, happily jumps into the van, travels quietly, loves playing with the resident dogs, knows what he’s allowed to chew while still learning what he isn’t allowed to. He knows he gets fed in a crate and readily goes into it, and sleeps in with the resident dogs. He can now be left (with the other dogs) for a few hours without being mischievous or destructive.

He’s learned the daily routine, settles down when nothing is happening, and gets very excited when things are. He’s not food fussy and likes treats.

Max does not come ready trained. He’s still young and learning and needs to be shown what he is expected to do.

If you want obedience you will need to teach it. He is now recalling 90% of the time from the end of a flexi-lead.

Max is very ‘friendly reactive’ when out and about and wants to say hello to everybody and every dog so he needs to learn boundaries. He gets very excitable when horse riders or vehicles pass us on the farm track.

He will leap into the air high enough to be able to look me in the eye (admittedly I’m only 5’3”), and coupled with two paws on my chest can potentially knock me off balance. He could easily knock over a small child.

Max is a fabulous, loving dog who will cuddle up on the sofa.

He loves to run and coupled with being able to clear obstacles we think he could enjoy agility, even if it’s only the equipment in an enclosed dog park.

He will need an enclosed garden that he can run around and explore, he will also need to go with at least one other dog, male or female doesn’t matter as long as they are friendly and happy to play, this will obviously be tested at a ‘meet and greet’ before adoption.

Max will need to be rehomed in the north east so he can be neutered at one of our vets at the appropriate time. He will also not be rehomed with any unneutered dogs. If you meet Max's criteria please fill in our application form at:

A successful homecheck and a £500 donation will apply. This includes his neutering when it is done.

Only successful applicants will be contacted. 😁
